Pegadaian strengthens corporate governance, stakeholder communication and digital transformation as Indonesia’s financial services ecosystem continues to evolve within ASEAN.

JAKARTA — PT Pegadaian has strengthened its corporate governance agenda as the financial services industry across Southeast Asia continues to evolve through digitalisation, greater connectivity and changing consumer expectations.

The Indonesian financial services company recently received the Winner of Indonesia Best Corporate Secretary for Governance Excellence 2026 award at the Corporate Secretary Champion 2026 event organised by Majalah SWA in Jakarta on September 1, 2026. The recognition highlighted the role of Pegadaian’s Corporate Secretary function in strengthening governance and maintaining transparent, effective and constructive communication with stakeholders.

The Corporate Secretary function is led by Dwi Hadi Atmaka, who said the recognition would encourage the company to continue improving the quality of corporate governance and communication. He also emphasised the importance of maintaining close and transparent relationships with stakeholders as part of strengthening corporate reputation.

Governance as a Strategic Foundation

For financial institutions operating in an increasingly interconnected regional environment, governance extends beyond compliance. It also encompasses how companies communicate material information, manage stakeholder relationships, respond to emerging risks and maintain confidence among customers, regulators, business partners and the wider public.

Pegadaian defines its Corporate Secretary as a supporting organ of the Board of Directors responsible for helping establish a positive corporate image and ensuring that material information is communicated to stakeholders accurately and on time. The function also coordinates with other corporate organs, including the Board of Commissioners and internal and external auditors.

The Corporate Secretary Champion 2026 assessment reflects this broader role. The judging process, conducted from July 7–9, 2026, included criteria covering compliance, investor relations, government relations, media and public relations, CSR programmes and crisis management. Pegadaian received a Very Good rating in the assessment.

Such areas are increasingly relevant to financial institutions across ASEAN, where digital financial services and cross-border economic activity are changing the way companies interact with customers and stakeholders.

Digitalisation and Financial Inclusion

Pegadaian’s governance agenda is developing alongside a significant transformation of its business and customer services. The company has expanded its digital capabilities through Tring! by Pegadaian, a platform designed to bring various financial and gold-related services into a single digital environment.

The shift reflects a wider transformation in Southeast Asian financial services, where consumers increasingly expect faster, more accessible and digitally enabled financial solutions. For companies, however, digital expansion also brings greater requirements for responsible governance, reliable information and risk management.

Pegadaian reported more than 34 million digital transactions throughout 2025, representing an approximately 324% year-on-year increase. The company has stated that its continued digital transformation in 2026 will be pursued while maintaining Good Corporate Governance principles.

This combination of digitalisation and governance is particularly relevant to financial inclusion. Digital platforms can expand access to financial services, but sustainable inclusion also depends on trust, transparency and the ability of institutions to manage increasingly complex digital interactions.

Building Indonesia’s Gold Ecosystem

Beyond its traditional financing business, Pegadaian is also expanding its role in Indonesia’s gold ecosystem. The company has developed integrated gold-related services and has positioned the gold ecosystem as one of its strategic business areas.

By April 2026, Pegadaian reported that the total value of its gold ecosystem management had reached approximately 145 tonnes. Its Gold Savings holdings exceeded 20 tonnes, while the outstanding balance of its Gold Installment product reached Rp13.85 trillion, representing year-on-year growth of 152.79%.

The company has also become involved in the development of Indonesia’s emerging bullion market. In July 2026, Pegadaian was part of the establishment process of the Indonesia Bullion Market Association (IBMA), an initiative aimed at supporting a more integrated and globally competitive bullion market in Indonesia.

Pegadaian has additionally entered into cooperation with the Indonesia Central Securities Depository (KSEI) concerning the development of Electronic Gold Receipt (EGR) infrastructure and gold-related exchange-traded fund products. The initiative represents another connection between the gold ecosystem and Indonesia’s capital market infrastructure.

A Regional Perspective

The development of Pegadaian illustrates how financial institutions in Southeast Asia are increasingly required to balance business innovation with governance. Digital services, alternative investment products and new financial ecosystems can create opportunities for growth, but they also require clear institutional responsibilities and transparent communication.

For Indonesia, the development of a more integrated gold ecosystem has implications beyond individual financial products. It connects financial services with commodity markets, investment infrastructure and broader economic activity.

Pegadaian’s financial performance has also expanded alongside these initiatives. The company reported net profit of Rp6.59 trillion for the first half of 2026, up 84.4% from Rp3.58 trillion in the same period of 2025. Total assets reached Rp186.33 trillion, while gross outstanding loans stood at Rp155.1 trillion.

Against this backdrop, the role of Corporate Secretary becomes increasingly important. As businesses become more complex and their stakeholder networks expand, corporate communication must keep pace with changes in operations, technology, regulation and market expectations.

For Pegadaian, the Corporate Secretary Champion 2026 recognition provides a marker of its ongoing governance efforts. The company’s next challenge lies in maintaining that governance framework while continuing to expand digital services, develop the gold ecosystem and respond to the evolving needs of Indonesian consumers.

From an ASEAN perspective, the experience also illustrates a broader direction for financial institutions: growth and innovation increasingly need to be accompanied by strong governance, transparent stakeholder engagement and responsible digital transformation.
