Denpasar — Bali’s economic landscape is entering a new chapter with the development of a new international airport under the leadership of Governor I Wayan Koster. Strategically located in Badung Regency, the island’s wealthiest district, the airport is expected to strengthen Bali’s position as Indonesia’s premier tourism hub.

According to the Ministry of Manpower’s Regulation No. 16 of 2024, Bali’s provincial minimum wage rose by 6.5% in 2025, reaching Rp2,996,561. Within the province, Badung recorded the highest district-level minimum wage at Rp3,534,338.88, reflecting its status as the island’s economic powerhouse.

Badung’s prosperity is fueled by world-renowned destinations such as Kuta and Nusa Dua, which consistently attract millions of international visitors. The presence of luxury resorts, convention centers, and cultural attractions has made the regency a cornerstone of Bali’s tourism-driven economy.

The new airport is expected to ease congestion at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, which has long operated near capacity. By expanding air connectivity, Bali aims to accommodate rising tourist arrivals while diversifying its economic base beyond hospitality.

Local officials emphasize that the project is not only about infrastructure but also about regional equity. With Badung contributing a significant share of Bali’s revenue, the airport is seen as a catalyst for broader development across the island.

Observers note that the combination of higher wages, robust tourism, and improved infrastructure could reinforce Bali’s resilience amid global economic shifts. However, challenges remain, including environmental sustainability and balancing growth with cultural preservation.

As Bali positions itself for the future, the new airport in Badung symbolizes more than just a gateway for travelers—it represents the island’s ambition to align prosperity, connectivity, and identity in a rapidly changing world.
