Doha — Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and founder of multiple global enterprises, has announced plans to scale back his political involvement, following intense scrutiny over his recent influence in U.S. policymaking. Speaking at an economic forum in Qatar, Musk declared his intent to reduce future political donations and reaffirmed his leadership role at Tesla.

Musk’s statement marks a clear retreat from the political spotlight, where he had emerged as a major donor to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, contributing over $250 million. “I do not currently see a reason,” he said when asked whether he would continue political spending at previous levels.

His remarks come after setbacks, including the defeat of a Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate he supported with over $20 million. Additionally, his advisory role in the controversial Doge program — a White House effort to cut federal spending — drew criticism both domestically and internationally.

The program’s impact has raised concerns within humanitarian circles. Reports by the United Nations suggested that Doge’s spending cuts affected vital global initiatives such as HIV/AIDS prevention. Musk, however, defended the effort, saying, “We are simply the adviser. In that context we are doing very well.”

Musk also addressed the implications of his political activism on Tesla’s performance. The company faced public backlash and targeted protests, particularly in Europe. However, Musk remains confident, stating, “It’s already turned around. We see no problem with demand.”

He confirmed that he plans to remain as Tesla’s CEO for at least five more years. He denied that his continued commitment to the company is tied to a disputed compensation package, describing it instead as a matter of “reasonable control.”

Musk’s political involvement had raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest, as his companies — including Tesla, Starlink, and social platform X — maintain contracts and regulatory ties with the U.S. government. His decision to step back may ease tensions and recalibrate his public and corporate roles.

As ASEAN nations watch global business and political dynamics closely, Musk’s realignment could influence regional confidence in the stability and direction of U.S.-linked corporate leadership.
