Cape Town – Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Water Issues, has been honored as a Champion for water investment by the Government of South Africa and the Global Outlook Council on Water Investment. The recognition was announced during the Africa Water Infrastructure Summit 2025, held in Cape Town from August 13 to 15.

This prestigious acknowledgment underscores Retno’s pioneering role as the first UN Special Envoy for Water, reflecting international trust in her efforts to strengthen water investment and address pressing challenges faced by nations and communities worldwide. The award was delivered virtually, with Retno expressing her gratitude through a video message.

“It is a great honor for me to receive this nomination as Champion in water investment. This demonstrates the confidence placed in the UN’s ongoing efforts to respond to urgent needs in the field,” Retno remarked. She emphasized that water investment extends beyond financial capital, encompassing political commitment, institutional capacity, human resources, and strategic partnerships.

Her message reinforced the urgency of investing in water infrastructure as a cornerstone of sustainable development. Retno also pledged to work closely with stakeholders through the Triple A approach: Advocacy, Alignment, and Acceleration.

The Africa Water Infrastructure Summit 2025 was organized within the framework of South Africa’s G20 Presidency. One of its significant outcomes was the establishment of the Global Outlook Council on Water Investment, tasked with monitoring progress, unlocking funding opportunities, and harmonizing international efforts in forums such as the G20, the UN, and multilateral development banks.

Alongside Retno, other prominent global figures were also recognized as Champions in water, including former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina, World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Celeste Saulo, and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon.

This collective recognition reflects a growing international consensus on the importance of water security and investment. With global demand for water infrastructure rising, the efforts of Champions like Retno Marsudi are set to play a decisive role in shaping sustainable solutions for future generations.
