Tel Aviv – In a rare gesture during the ongoing Gaza conflict, Hamas released Edan Alexander, a hostage with dual US and Israeli nationality, during a brief suspension of military operations on May 12. The International Committee of the Red Cross confirmed it facilitated his safe handover to Israeli forces after nearly 19 months in captivity.
Despite international praise for the move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu firmly stated that no broader ceasefire agreement has been reached, nor is a full-scale hostage exchange in sight.
Hamas framed the release as a message of goodwill to former US President Donald Trump, who is currently touring the Middle East. Trump, who first shared the news online before the official release, hailed it as a diplomatic success.
Channel 12 in Israel reported that Alexander’s health condition was poor at the time of release. Nonetheless, his return has prompted both relief and renewed discussions over Israel’s handling of its military strategy and negotiations.
Netanyahu attributed the release to the dual effect of military pressure in Gaza and political efforts from Trump’s side. He emphasized the continued strategic commitment between Israel and the United States in securing national interests and dealing with militant threats.
This development takes place amid increasing international attention on Gaza, as ceasefire prospects remain slim despite rising calls for de-escalation.
