Malaysia – Malaysia has once again been crowned the world’s leading Muslim-friendly travel destination, earning the Best Muslim-Friendly Destination of the Year title in the 2025 Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI). This marks the 10th consecutive year Malaysia has led the index, solidifying its position as a global benchmark in halal tourism.

The recognition was announced at the 4th Halal in Travel Awards, held in Singapore, where Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, accepted the award on behalf of Malaysia.

In his address, Khairul Firdaus highlighted the multi-sectoral collaboration that underpins Malaysia’s sustained leadership. “This award is a reflection of our collective commitment to ensuring Malaysia remains inclusive, accessible, and welcoming to Muslim travellers,” he stated.

He also emphasized the role of the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) and its flagship initiatives, such as the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition (MFAR) scheme and the Muslim-Friendly Tourist Guide Certification, both of which aim to elevate service standards across the tourism sector.

Compiled by CrescentRating, GMTI evaluates destinations based on criteria including the availability of halal food, prayer facilities, family-friendly services, and overall cultural sensitivity. Malaysia’s well-established halal certification infrastructure, widespread access to mosques and prayer spaces, and integrated hospitality policies have set the country apart in this space.

Khairul Firdaus also extended his gratitude to CrescentRating and Mastercard for their continued support in advancing halal tourism and noted the broader significance of the recognition. “This not only fosters healthy competition among destinations but also underscores the growing influence of Muslim travellers on global tourism trends.”

Looking ahead to Visit Malaysia Year 2026, the Deputy Minister offered a warm invitation:
“Come experience our rich heritage, vibrant festivals, and unmatched hospitality in the coming year.”

Malaysia’s recognition at the GMTI 2025 Awards further strengthens ASEAN’s collective reputation as a region of inclusive, culturally sensitive tourism destinations.
