Medan – PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) is reinforcing its position as a global player in sustainable metals, with President Director Melati Sarnita underscoring the company’s commitment to green aluminium production. Speaking at the LPS Financial Festival in Medan (21/8), she emphasized the need for renewable energy to support Inalum’s smelting facilities in Kuala Tanjung, North Sumatra.

In 2024, Inalum’s aluminium output reached 274,000 tons, exceeding its initial design capacity of 250,000 tons. The facility has since been optimized to reach a ceiling of 275,000 tons. “We want to contribute more to North Sumatra, maintaining today’s achievements and building on them for the future,” Melati noted.

Currently recognized as a sustainable producer with green-certified products, Inalum is seeking stronger government support to tap into new renewable energy sources. “With renewable power at Kuala Tanjung, we can sustain green aluminium production — something very few countries can claim,” Melati explained.

North Sumatra itself holds significant renewable potential, particularly in hydropower and geothermal energy. Leveraging these resources would not only reduce Inalum’s carbon footprint but also reinforce Indonesia’s strategic role in supplying eco-friendly aluminium to global markets increasingly demanding low-carbon materials.

The shift aligns with broader sustainability goals in the metals industry, where producers are under growing pressure to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Aluminium, as a key input for automotive, construction, and energy storage sectors, is especially critical for the global transition to net zero.

With the right policies and infrastructure, Inalum’s renewable-powered operations could place Indonesia among the select group of nations capable of producing large-scale green aluminium. For a resource-rich province like North Sumatra, the initiative represents not only an industrial milestone but also a long-term investment in sustainable regional growth.
